Bilingual community members, aspiring interpreters and working professionals in Rockhampton have explored career opportunities in interpreting through a community-led workforce development program.
The session was organised under the Interpreter Employment Success Program (IESP) of the Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ), in partnership with 2M Language Services and NAATI. It brought participants together to discuss how their existing language skills could be developed into professional opportunities.
The program highlighted the value of multilingual abilities as a workforce skill and provided participants with an opportunity to learn about different pathways into the interpreting profession.
The Rockhampton session focused on what is required to enter the profession, the opportunities available and the experiences of people already working in the field. Participants also shared their own experiences and explored how language skills could be translated into employment opportunities.
ECCQ said community-led workforce development was important because it connected people, experience and opportunities rather than simply providing information.
The IESP is a Queensland Government-funded initiative delivered by ECCQ in partnership with 2M Language Services and SSI, with support from NAATI. The program is designed to support pathways into the interpreting profession and help participants understand the requirements of entering the sector.
The initiative is scheduled to continue until September 2026, with free registration available for those interested in exploring opportunities in interpreting.
