The Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ) is set to hold an online webinar on September 9 to help aged-care workers communicate more effectively with older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Titled “Communicating Across Cultures,” the webinar will examine how language, communication styles, family roles and cultural expectations can influence interactions with older people from multicultural communities.
The session is aimed at frontline aged-care workers, coordinators and volunteers and will provide practical guidance on communicating respectfully and confidently with older people and their families across cultural and language differences.
The webinar will cover different communication styles and expectations, assumptions around eye contact, touch, personal space and authority, as well as the use of respectful language, tone and body language. It will also look at how workers can respond when cultural expectations differ from established workplace practices.
ECCQ said the interactive session would use realistic scenarios, polls and activities to help participants apply the lessons to everyday situations. The focus will be on moving beyond general notions of respect and developing practical approaches to culturally responsive aged care.
