The Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ) has marked 50 years of service to the state’s multicultural communities at a civic reception hosted by Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.
The reception recognised ECCQ’s work with culturally diverse communities and celebrated the people, stories and contributions that have helped shape Queensland and Australia, according to ECCQ.
The organisation said the Lord Mayor highlighted Australia’s identity as a migrant nation and the important contribution of migration to the country’s development.
ECCQ Chair Elijah Buol OAM also reflected on the organisation’s five-decade journey and its role in supporting multicultural communities.
Buol described multiculturalism as a shared journey and stressed the importance of ensuring that all communities feel included and connected.
For five decades, ECCQ has worked alongside culturally diverse communities on issues including inclusion, equity and belonging. The organisation said its commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive Queensland remains as important as ever.
ECCQ also thanked the Lord Mayor and Brisbane City Council for recognising the contribution of its volunteers, advocates and community workers and for celebrating the generations of people who have helped shape the organisation’s work.
The 50th anniversary celebrations provide an opportunity for ECCQ to reflect on its history while looking ahead to its continuing role in supporting Queensland’s multicultural communities
