Brisbane, January 26 (MCCQ Newsdesk)
The Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ) marked Australia Day by welcoming new citizens and acknowledging the day’s complex significance for First Nations people.
In a statement shared on Facebook, ECCQ celebrated those who received their citizenship on January 26, writing, “We are honoured to welcome you as citizens and join us in upholding Australia’s values of freedom, democracy, equality and respect.”
At the same time, ECCQ expressed sensitivity to the concerns raised by First Nations people regarding the celebration of Australia Day and its historical context. The council emphasized that Australia is a nation built on the foundation of its First peoples and enriched by migrants from diverse backgrounds.
This dual message highlights ECCQ’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and mutual respect in a multicultural society.
