The Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ) hosted an online conversation on September 23 to explore the relationship between dementia and culture as part of Dementia Action Week, while also launching a new self-paced online course for aged-care workers.
The session, titled Let’s Talk About Dementia, featured Daniela Russo, neuro educator, gerontologist and founder of Between Neurons. The discussion examined how cultural backgrounds could influence the way dementia is understood and experienced.
The conversation encouraged the participants to challenge assumptions and share perspectives on dementia and culture. It was part of Dementia Action Week, September 21 to 27, which this year focuses on the theme Let’s Talk About Dementia.
The event also marked the launch of ECCQ’s new online self-paced course for aged-care workers, Seeing the Person: Introduction to Dementia and Culturally Responsive Care.
According to ECCQ, the course is designed to support greater understanding of dementia and culturally responsive care among people working with older people from diverse communities.
The initiative highlights the role of cultural understanding in dementia care and encourages discussion about how people’s cultural experiences can shape their understanding of dementia and their engagement with care and support services.
