In a statement shared on Facebook, ECCQ celebrated those who received their citizenship on January 26, writing, “We are honoured to welcome you as citizens and join us in upholding Australia’s values of freedom, democracy, equality and respect.” At the same time, ECCQ expressed sensitivity to the concerns raised by First Nations people regarding the celebration of Australia Day and its historical context. The council emphasized that Australia is a nation built on the foundation of its First peoples and enriched by migrants from diverse backgrounds.
