The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) and nib foundation have partnered to support the mental wellbeing of Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme workers through a new initiative focused on culturally safe conversations, community-based support and improved access to health information.
The partnership was announced by nib foundation on September 2 as part of its Partners for Health Equity program.
Under the initiative, FECCA will train Wellbeing Champions from trusted local communities to lead culturally safe conversations about mental wellbeing and help connect PALM scheme workers with available support services.
The program is aimed at strengthening access to mental health and wellbeing support for workers from culturally diverse backgrounds.
nib foundation said the partnership builds on its longstanding support for PALM scheme workers and reflects a shared commitment with FECCA to improving access to health information, support and care for culturally diverse communities.
The initiative will use community-based Wellbeing Champions to help create trusted pathways for PALM workers seeking information and support around mental wellbeing.
FECCA’s involvement will focus on building the capacity of local community members to have culturally appropriate conversations about wellbeing and help workers identify available services.
The partnership forms part of nib foundation’s broader vision of helping people live longer in better health, while addressing health equity for people from culturally diverse backgrounds.
The initiative also recognises the importance of culturally appropriate approaches when discussing mental wellbeing and accessing support.
Through the collaboration, FECCA and nib foundation will seek to strengthen connections between PALM workers, local communities and existing health and wellbeing services.
