The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) has welcomed the Australian Government’s consultation on reforms to Australia’s settlement grants programs, calling for the experiences and expertise of multicultural communities and organisations delivering settlement services to inform the reform process.
FECCA said the settlement programs play a critical role in helping migrants and humanitarian entrants build secure, connected and fulfilling lives in Australia.
The organisation said any reform of the programs should be shaped by the communities that rely on these services and by the organisations responsible for delivering them.
The Australian Government has released the Discussion Paper: Reforming Australia’s Settlement Grants Programs, September 2026, as part of the consultation process.
FECCA said it intends to consult widely across its membership network and the broader multicultural sector before developing its response to the discussion paper.
The organisation has called on its member organisations and the wider multicultural sector to contribute their experiences and expertise to the consultation.
FECCA said bringing together the knowledge of communities and service providers would help ensure that the experiences of people who use settlement services are reflected in the reform process.
The consultation involves multicultural community organisations across Australia, with FECCA encouraging its network to engage with the discussion paper and provide input.
The organisation also directed members and stakeholders to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website to access the discussion paper and information about participating in the consultation.
FECCA’s response will form part of the broader community-sector engagement on the proposed reform of Australia’s settlement grants programs.
