The Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) celebrated the 7th National Multicultural Mental Health Month launch on October 4 in Melbourne, bringing together dignitaries, supporters, and volunteers from more than 40 nationalities to promote diversity and unity in mental health awareness.
The event was held under the theme “Lived Experience Leads the Way,” highlighting the vital role of lived experience in guiding mental health initiatives. Chairperson Professor Melissa Green, Federal Member for Aston Mary Doyle MP, local Mayors and Councillors, and lived experience speakers Dianne Simboro and Richard Lim OAM, the 2024 Mental Health Advocate of the Year, shared reflections that underscored the importance of understanding mental health through personal and community experiences.
The evening featured the presentation of the Mental Health Awards and the Consumers Art Competition Awards, recognising outstanding contributions and creativity in promoting mental health and wellbeing within multicultural communities.
Guests enjoyed a three-course multicultural culinary experience prepared by Mr Jianming Chen and the ANIBT team, with the venue generously sponsored by the Australian Indian Charitable Trust. Additional support came from Tandoori Junction Caterers, Indo Ceylon Spices, OMED Fresh Market, and Stockman Wines, proudly sponsored by YPA Diamond Creek, contributing to the success and vibrancy of the event.
The program was hosted by Aneka Srinivasan, MHFA Volunteer Supervisor and Senior Psychologist from Elysium Psychology. CEO Vasan Srinivasan and the MHFA board provided leadership and guidance throughout the event. The small but dedicated staff team, including Aisha Usman, Amanda Cops, Nithya Viswanathan, Jotpreet Kaur, and Vy Nguyen, along with interns and volunteers, ensured smooth operations from setup to cleanup.
The MHFA’s National Multicultural Mental Health Month Launch emphasised the importance of cultural diversity, community engagement, and lived experience in shaping mental health initiatives. The event left a lasting impression on attendees, reinforcing the commitment to building inclusive and supportive mental health systems for Australia’s multicultural communities.
